The 3rd Sunday in June!

The third Sunday in June has been designated as “Father’s Day” for 100 years. The complex concept of fathers and mothers is interesting when one reflects upon their own lives. The perception changes as one gets older, from this ‘super human person’ to a ‘fragile person’ as they age. We are trapped with all of the bitter-sweetness of this relationship. In so many cases our fathers past from this world years before our mothers and yet we are always comparing our accomplishments to the accomplishments of this man.
As a father I find that Marlene Dietrich actually captured the essences of being a father, when she stated: “a king, realizing his incompetence, can either delegate or abdicate his duties. A father can do neither. If only sons could see the paradox, they would understand the dilemma.”
In the final analysis Anne Sexton was correct when she stated, “it doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.” Therefore, I can say with pride Happy Fathers Day to John T. Copeland, Sr. Your gift to me was simple; you taught me what not do.
